Ollas-JAMET® were elaborated and developed by and for plant professionals.


All the development and manufacturing processes, from the choice of raw materials to cooking, are controlled in our factory.


Ollas-JAMET® are produced using unique techniques which guarantees the best results in porosity, resistance and optimal irrigation qualities.


Our artisanal know-how allows a production of superior quality in conformity with the highest requirements by the professionals of the horticulture. It’s called Professional Quality Pottery JAMET®.


The “Professional Quality Pottery JAMET®” is ensured by 3 Master Ceramists and requires 10 separate manufacturing stages.

Beforehand, we entirely manufacture our different clay mixes to make our homemade shaping clays, called "unwashed", necessary and specific to each collection.



1 ° Preparation of the clay to shape Pottery JAMET®


STEP 1 Choice and State of the Raw Clay

The clay mix dedicated exclusively to Ollas-JAMET® requires 4 specific raw clays, exclusively from France, and free of any pollution.


Each of the raw clay has specific properties of porosity, mechanical and thermal resistance, ease and resistance to shaping which is essential for larger models.


They are first extracted from quarries, then left for a long time exposed to the weather.

This allows the fermentation of organic matter which naturally improves the elasticity and the homogeneous mixture of the different clays.

STEP 2 Grinding

Each raw clay is dry crushed separately in a mill and then sent to the sieve and to the iron removal to reduce them to the state of fine dust. They are then always dry-mixed in precise proportions for each range of products.


Depending on the collections and sizes of the pieces to be made, Pottery JAMET® will carefully adjust the grain size of the "fine clays" and the proportions of the mixture of each models.


This essential operation makes it possible to obtain ceramics only with the natural and homogeneous grain of the "fine clays", without any other hard rock or chamotte/firesand.


The different « in-house" Pottery JAMET® clays, having this graining, have an internal structure much more solid and homogeneous than "classic" pre-washed clays with or without the addition of a « Chamotte" or firesand.


This unique process gives JAMET ceramics exceptional resistance and durability making them insensitive to frost and allows you to choose different degrees of porosity according to the different ranges.

Even being thicker, the Ollas-Jamet® ensure excellent porosity for perfect irrigation, just enough, thanks to the precise "graining" developed by Pottery JAMET®.


STEP 3 Dry mix and Adjustments

Raw clays, even from the same quarry, may have a different composition from one mining stratum to another.

This is why we adjust each preparation with one or more of our ground crushed and sieved clays to obtain the perfect mixture guaranteeing the technical characteristics of porosity and resistance.


Tests for absorbing water from the dry mixture are then carried out to check the level of porosity and elasticity of the future clay to be shaped before wetting and kneading.

If necessary, the dry-mix is ​​adjusted again with one or more soils reduced to fine dust until the right mix is ​​obtained.


STEP 4 Wetting and Mixing

The dry mixture is humidified and then kneaded.

Depending on the model to be shaped and according to the ranges, the wet mixture can be adjusted if necessary one or more times in water and / or fine clay.


STEP 5 Resting the JAMET dough

Once the kneading is finished, the clay is left to “rot & rest” outdoor between 8C° and 15C° (depending on the weather conditions and the time of the year). This process allows its fermentation ensuring perfect homogeneity. This will help to avoid the subsequent risk of microcracks and give a clay that is easier to turn and has great resistance.


STEP 6 Extrusion

This is the final phase of the preparation of the clay to be shaped.


The wet and rested clay is kneaded one last time, then put in an extruder which extracts the air contained inside in order to make compact loaves of clay, calibrated according to the size of the pieces to be worked.

The clay for shaping is now ready to use for turning or stringing the Ollas-JAMET®.



2 ° Turning or rope assembly of the Ollas-JAMET®


STEP 7 Lathe manufacturing

Lathe manufacturing concerns all standard size Ollas (<50L).

The potter takes his calibrated breads on a lathe adjusting the parts to be produced.

The production of these collections in turn can only be manual: 

"because only the hand of man, by controlling the pressure exerted on the clay to be shaped, can guarantee the ideal balance between resistance and porosity" says Laurent Jamet.


The experience and mastery of turning of the Jamet family allows:

-fast production rate for small and medium volume parts

-regular production of large volume parts

-turning parts> 15 kg


STEP 7 Rope manufacturing

The rope production only concerns the Ol-BEE Jamet®:  made to measure> 100 L and 200 L intended for professional beekeepers for large colonies transhumed or not.


This ancestral knowledge has been updated and perfected by Poterie Jamet since 2005.

The potter first makes a wooden template reproducing the internal shape of the piece to be produced. A hemp rope is then wrapped around the template over its entire height.


JAMET homemade clays are reworked and then applied to the rope in 3 stages.


Once the model is finished, its surface is smoothed or decorated or for some cases, engraved with the name of the beekeeping domain.


After the clay has firmed up, the wooden template is dismantled from the piece and removed.


The first levels of rope are removed to finish the collar. The rope can then also be removed little by little, with a height of 5 cm to 20 cm per day depending on weather conditions. The rope will leave its mark inside the chamber.


The interior of the ceramics is smoothed out or left raw with traces of rope according to the customer's requests.



3 ° Drying of Ollas-JAMET®


STEP 8

All collections are gently dried out in our 3 ventilation rooms most of the time at room temperature.


Ventilation, temperature and humidity are constantly monitored and adjusted according to weather conditions, if necessary.


This allows ceramics to dry gently, without rushing them while keeping the homogeneity of their internal structure intact.


This simple but essential operation requires the necessary time because it contributes to the mechanical resistance of the ceramics and prevents them from microcracks. This would then reflect on their capacity of radius of action and autonomy of irrigation.


The 45 years of experience of Pottery JAMET® have taught to never rush this crucial step. It will determine the quality of Ollas-JAMET ® and avoid cracked ceramics at the end of cooking or micro-leaks.

The natural drying time of these varies between 2 days and a week depending on their size and weight.

The drying of the rope-mounted Ollas-JAMET®, including removal of the rope, will last between 3 and 5 weeks depending on the weather, the size and complexity of the jars.



4 ° Cooking of Ollas-JAMET®


STEP 9

Once the Ollas have completely dried, they are methodically placed in the oven in order to have a uniform circulation of heat around in each oven. We cook for a long time with different stages and cooking times as well as an overcooking phase.

The cooking is carried out in 2 ovens, one of a small to medium capacity and the other of a very large volume (a complete semi-trailer).


Our cooking technique and programming have been designed solely to optimize and finalize our entire manufacturing process to guarantee superior quality that meets the expectations of experienced users.

5 ° Quality control of Pottery JAMET® ceramics


STEP 10

A specific quality control for each batch is carried out on a few samples. This protocol based on more than 45 years of experience validates the quality of the entire batch.


The loss rate of ceramics that do not comply with the "professional Pottery JAMET® quality" charter, from the start of shaping to the end of cooking, is less than 1% including prototypes. In pottery crafts, it is exceptional.



6 ° Production and deadlines


Excluding prototypes, Pottery JAMET® produces 50,000 pieces per year currently, planning to reach 100,000 pieces by the end of next year & 1,000,000 pieces production capacity within 3-5yrs.


From the mixing of the raw clays to the end of cooking, the manufacturing time varies from:

  • 2 to 3 weeks for the Ollas « turned »

  • 4 to 5 weeks for beekeeping Ollas> 100 L

7 ° Shipping


The manufacture Pottery JAMET® ships its production throughout France and to several countries such as Italy, Canada, recently England, Germany and many other countries to come.


In order for our customers to receive their ceramics in perfect condition, the manufacture Pottery JAMET® careful care in preparing its shipments.

Any order, even for a single piece, is wrapped, palletized and surrounded by a stretch-blown-opaque film, very resistant and protective.


Pottery JAMET® is then shipped by 2 carriers to all destinations with special guarantees on the transport of ceramics.



8 ° Probus Pottery JAMET

As an example, a medium sized Ollas-JAMET® like n ° 5 of 9 Liters

             will have at least 11/12 days of autonomy and an irrigation area of ​​2m².

Ollas without microcracks, insensitive to frost (tested at -27 ° C) and limescale.


Since 2014, the affixing of the seal "Ollas Poterie Jamet 86" reflects the strict standards of quality and longevity to which the Ollas-JAMET® are subjected.

9 ° Advantages Ollas-JAMET

Keep the substrate fresh and airy

The very gentle watering from below gives a soil not saturated with water.

The substrate will be moist just enough to have a rich biological activity (bacterial and microbial) which makes soils favorable to the development of plants without fertilizers and/or mechanical action. Due to a very aerated by microbial life.

Do not fear frost

Leave the Ollas-JAMET® empty during the winter, the ceramic will not burst or break even in very cold weather.

Tested for more than 6 years in France and recently without problem in Canadian winters…


Little or not sensitive to limescale.

Amateur and professional gardeners who have used the Ollas-JAMET for more than 5 years in the Charentes department (16), one of the places with some of the hardest water in limescale in France. Our customers have not yet noticed a decrease in porosity.

10 ° Research & Development Ollas-JAMET


This range required 2 years of research, development and investment from 2012 to 2014:

18 months to develop the technical qualities of the ceramic (resistance

              mechanical and thermal, porosity, radius of action, autonomy ... in accordance with the needs established by horticulture professionals
